Bringing a new area carpet into the home for the first time can be very interesting. You look forward to seeing how this new feature will prepare your room for just dealing with the curling problem. This can be frustrating when you first bring the accessories home but it is relatively easy to flatten the curved area carpet.

Choosing a brand new area carpet is an interesting process. Adding a patterned rug to your dining room or a plush shag-throw rig to your bedroom is a simple and effective home improvement hack.

Once it arrives at your home, you can’t wait to spread it out in your living space to see how it aesthetically complements your design.

But sometimes, carpets just don’t work.

Area carpets are usually wrapped to prevent cracking and transport damage. Over time, most carpets will naturally flatten, but this can take weeks.

Or you may find a vintage rug folded in storage, creating deep creases with piles that detract from the beautiful patterns.

You’ve put a lot of time, effort and money into buying your new carpet. Ugly creases and bumps are far from the overall aesthetic and pose a dangerous tripping hazard to your home.

So how do you flatten an area that seems to want to regenerate itself?

The best way to speed up the flattening process is to invest in a high quality rug pad that will hold the carpet’s back and hold it firmly to your floor.

Let’s take a look at how an area rig pad will help smooth out your carpet faster, how to flatten carpet what you need to know before you buy, and the best rig pad for the job.

Remove wrinkles from the small rug

It’s easy to flatten small rugs using the weight of your mattress. Keep the carpet flat between your mattress and box spring. Leave it for at least a week before you see the result. This method also works on stubborn creases and curling – the longer you leave the carpet under the mattress, the more flattering it will be. Try one of the following methods for faster results (or stubborn craze).

How to flatten area carpets that have been rolled.

Carpets wrapped in tubes often roll over. The fibers in the carpet have softened into tubes, so you’ll want to ‘train’ them to lie in the opposite direction.

Most carpets become more flexible with heat. Start by turning the carpet upside down, in direct sunlight for a few hours. It helps speed up the process of relaxing the fibers. If it is not flat at all after exposure to the sun, it will be easier to soften and reverse roll.

If the carpet is rolled out to the right and to the floor, it will easily flatten with some weight on the corners for a few days. Place the carpet in the room where you intend to use it, and then arrange your furniture to sit on the corners. In a week or two, your carpet will be comfortable and smooth, and you can place your furniture where it belongs.

If the carpet was rolled to the right and continues to roll upwards, reverse it. Just roll it back up, right. Wrap a loose cord around it and leave it for several days.

If the end of a large rug is tilted upwards, you can place the rug upside down in your room. Weigh the corners with books or furniture. This will sound weird for a week or two! But then you can turn it to the right and it should be flat.

How to flatten a carpet with curved corners

Reverse rolling works well for curling corners on new area rigs. You can gently attach the corners under the carpet for several days. To avoid creating new creases, be sure not to step on them or flatten them.
Non-curved corner protectors can be very effective for high-traffic areas where corners are curved.

How to remove area carpet wrinkles

A little extra effort may be needed to remove the sharp creases in the carpet of an area. The heat and moisture are very effective in leaving the crease to soothe the back of the carpet. Remember, never use moisture on natural fiber carpets.

Start with heat to soften the back of the carpet. Leave the carpet upside down in direct sunlight for a few hours. If this is not possible, turn the carpet over and use a low-order hair dryer to warm the fallen area. To avoid damaging the carpet, keep the hair dryer 6 to 9 inches away from the carpet and keep moving it. Gently fold the crease in the opposite direction and let it cool, then flatten the carpet. Use this dry heat method for natural fiber area carpets.

If you have a stem cleaner with upholstery attachments, you can use it on synthetic, cotton and wool carpets. A hand-held clothes steamer is also effective. Just be sure to steam the back of the carpet and don’t soak the fibers. Then gently twist the fibers and let them dry.

Moisture and heat can also remove furniture dents from area carpets. Try our favorite recipes for easy tooth removal:

  • Use a water spray bottle to replenish dental fibers. Then dry the area with a blow dryer over medium heat, as soon as it is dry, wipe the fibers with a terry towel.
  • Put an ice cube on the dent and let it melt overnight. The dripping water will stretch the fibers, and you can dry and fluff them up the next day.
  • Use a cloth steamer and pick-up comb to gently steam and lift the fibers. Keep the heat at least six inches away to avoid damaging the carpet.
  • Spray the wrinkles with a wrinkle remover, then fluff the fibers with a clean terry washcloth.Β

How do professionals flatten area carpets?

Interior designers and rig dealers use professional wrinkle remover sprays to quickly remove creases from area carpets. Find a wrinkle removal spray that is safe for curtain fabrics and upholstery. The spray releases the fibers’ ‘memory’, allowing them to relax more easily. Freely spray creases or curling areas on the back of the carpet. Then let the carpet dry. If necessary, follow one of the above methods – reverse rolling, low heat steam, or carpet weight.

Step 1 – Steam or wet the edges.

Curling is a common problem for area carpets due to the fact that they have spent most of their lives in one form or another. Fortunately, there are several things that can be done to help ease the way. First, try to wet the areas where curling is worst with a steam cleaner or wet sponge. Water will help loosen the fibers and make them smoother. Once the water is dry, there must be some improvement. If not, there are other methods that can be tried.

Step 2 – Iron

Take a wet towel and wet the area where the carpet is moving. Then, take an iron and set it on medium heat. Cover the carpet area with a towel while still holding the iron. This should flatten the areas. Do not put the iron on too much heat as it can leave burn marks on new carpets. To be extra careful, you can consider starting with low heat and working as needed. If this method fails, you can try something else.

Step 3 – Use the Furniture

Take the carpet and place it where you intend to lay it. Take the available pieces of furniture and place them around the corners. This is usually the place where curling is worst. This may not be the best look for a room but it is only temporary and this issue should be resolved within a week or more. Once that time has passed, remove the furniture so that the flattened carpet will hopefully appear.

Step 4 – Use Books

For some people, space restrictions may not allow the use of furniture. In that case, touch all the large books you have. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, phone books, etc. are great, but any large, heavy book will work. Leave the books in place for a week or two. Remove again over time and the carpet should be flat.

Step 5 – Try Your Bed

For really stubborn area rugs there is one final solution to try. Remove the area rug from the floor and place it between your mattress and box spring. Make sure it lies completely flat, and leave it for at least a week before you check the result. This method should work for rugs that are badly curled at the corners, but the rug obviously needs to be the size of the bed or smaller for the best results.

Step 6 – Reverse

Simply taking the carpet and laying it upside down will also help stop curling. It may look odd for a while, but you should have a flattened area rug in about a week or so.
