I never thought about using carpet freshener because we don’t have any carpets in my house.
Until I realized that our rug can get dirty and smell bad. It has quickly become the number one reason my house smells smelly and choppy.
Please, tell me I’m not the only one who has a carpet that can smell bad and out of place.
To be honest, the last thing I want is a house that doesn’t smell clean and fresh. I want to go in and just say AHHHH, and enjoy the cleanliness of my house. This is coming from an eccentric person.
But, with the kids and pets who managed to sneak by me daily covered in who knows what from our farm, the carpet in my house took a beating.
When we built our house, Barndominium almost 15 years ago before Joanna Gaines made it very popular. My first goal was to get as much wood or laminate flooring as possible.
With allergies since I was a little girl, I know the exercises.
Fewer rugs mean fewer problems for me.
While I was able to break out a few bedrooms in our house with rugs, I still ended up with several large rugs.
Let’s be honest, area rugs can get dirty and stinky.
All of this leads to the dilemma I was facing when I began my journey of giving up perfumes manufactured to help allergies. Giving up synthetic fragrances as part of the slow adoption of a non-toxic lifestyle meant I had to give up my favorite refreshing Glade carpet powder.
You know the one, it makes your house smell great.
I love to make my carpet smell fresh and clean. Because in most cases, if you have a big vacuum cleaner that sucks up dirt, smelling good also means cleanliness.
So, this handcrafted mommy worked to create a DIY carpet freshener made with essential oils that will make your home fresh and clean as well as inexpensive to make.
This simple cleaning is my secret weapon to making my house smell great. I’ve learned that a smelly rug can ruin a smelly home.

What Is Carpet Freshener?
A carpet freshener is something you spray or spray on the carpet to help cover or remove odors in the carpet fibers.
A home made carpet freshener is not the same as a homemade carpet cleaner. Carpet fresheners do not clean the carpet, but they do help get rid of odors stuck in the fibers.
Some people call it carpet freshener, carpet freshener or carpet freshener.
The most popular carpet fresheners, in my opinion, are those that come in powder form. Carpet powder is usually white to help prevent the staining of light carpets.
How Do Odors Get In The Carpet?
Well, in my high traffic home, it mostly comes in the form of kids and pets coming and going from outside and bringing whatever they’ve been in.
But smells can also come from cooking smells, I’m notorious for burning toast. And we have a new rule in our house, all fish are cooked outside!
Carpet odors also give off stove odors if you burn wood as we do in the winter.
Carpets can also absorb odors over time from: candle smoke, pet urine, spilled milk, and smelly trash can.
What can I use to deodorize and freshen my carpet?
My favorite carpet freshener is baking soda. Baking soda is an inexpensive but great way to absorb and get rid of unpleasant home carpet odors.
What I love is that I can also add essential oils to baking soda to make my glass-inspired carpet freshener.

Is baking soda safe for my carpet?
Yes and no.
Yes, baking soda is a safe, natural way to freshen up your carpet and is also safe for the whole family.
The answer does not come with overuse.
Baking soda is made of very small particles.
If you use it a lot, it can sift the fibers into the lining on the floor so that no vacuum can get them out.
I use baking soda in moderation because frankly a little goes a long way to creating a home that smells fresh.
Is Baking Soda Safe For Vacuums?
I did fairly lengthy research on this topic. We invested quite a bit of money in a nice compact vacuum cleaner and the last thing I wanted to do was be frugal.
What I’ve found when checking vacuum-related blogs is that when baking soda is used in excess with the vacuum cleaner, the baking soda can clog and potentially corrode the vacuum cleaner parts and motors.
Because baking soda is a fine powder, it can bypass some bags and HEPA filters to get into the engine.
To prevent this wear, I use HEPA filters and bags designed specifically for my vacuum cleaner. No aftermarket ones.
I also change the suction bags regularly to make sure I still get great suction power and there aren’t any rips or tears in the bag. I do the same for my HEPA filters too.
I’ve had the same vacuum for nearly 15 years and it’s still working hard. And all those years I’ve been using some kind of carpet powder.
I don’t use handmade carpet freshener every time I vacuum but I do use it about once a month.
To answer the question,
Can I use carpet powder with a Shark Stand Vacuum Cleaner or a vacuum cleaner like the Irobot Roomba?
I think a Shark broom or another canister-type vacuum will do just as well with moderate use of vacuuming powder as my own, but I wouldn’t recommend an Irobot vacuum with a homemade carpet cleaner or powder.
The Irobot Roomba is on the most wanted list. I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to let her clean my floors while I do another household cleaning task.
But the way the Irobot vacuums are made, all the electronics and there is no bag for dirt and carpet freshener, I think it is better not to use powdered carpet freshener with a robotic vacuum cleaner.

How long do you keep baking soda on the carpet?
I leave the homemade carpet mix on the carpet or rug for at least 20 minutes, so it gives the baking soda a chance to absorb the smell and the carpet fibers to absorb some of the wonderful essential oil scents.
You can leave the carpet powder on overnight if you need to, too.
How long I leave the baking soda on the carpet depends on the smell I’m trying to absorb and/or my cleaning schedule.
Sometimes life gets busy and I can’t vacuum carpet freshener quickly. So it might just sit there for 20 minutes to a day.
Can Baking Soda Stain A Carpet?
I would caution against using essential oils that have a strong color like Young Living’s Valor which is a deep blue color.
Using an essential oil that has a natural color can, over time, how make carpet freshener leave enough color in a lighter carpet that you can see.
When using the scent of all-natural essential oils in carpet freshener, I tend to go for lighter, clearer essential oil options.
My favorite essential oils for freshening carpets are lemon and fresh citrus.

Scented baking soda recipes for carpet freshener
I like to perfume my carpet freshener with essential oils. I tend to make recipes that make my house smell like a spa. For me, there is nothing better than a home that smells clean, fresh, and comfortable.
10 Lemon* + 10 Eucalyptus
8 Cedarwood + 2 Ylang Ylang + 10 Tangerine
5 Rosemary + 10 Citrus Fresh*
2 Lavender* + 10 Lemon* + 5 Peppermint*
10 Thieves* + 10 Lemon*
To get my girls excited about cleaning their rooms as part of completing their weekly chores planner, I use 20 drops of Citrus Fresh, they love the smell and say it reminds them of fruit rings.
Citrus Fresh is a great all-around cleansing oil that you can only get from Young Living. I’m so glad they included it in their premium starter kit.
Plus it’s a great oil that’s safe to use around pets too.

Video on how to make carpet powder
When I first started using essential oils and blogging, on I wrote this post on how to make your home smell great by making carpet powder using essential oils.
The recipe I included in this post is pretty close to what I was using at the time, but I started cutting back on the essential oils. I now find that using fewer essential oils and letting them sit longer gives me a better, cleaner smell for my carpets and rugs.
But you can still watch this video to see me making carpet freshener. You may prefer this recipe better.

STORING YOUR CARPET POWDER
I like to store my carpet powder in wide-mouth 16oz glass jars like these because they have smooth sides so I can make a very nice vinyl sticker with my Cricut Explore Air™ Machine and it will stick easily and stay on the side of the jar.
The best part is that this glassware is tall and slim which makes it easy to shake to get a nice layer of carpet freshener on your carpet.
If there is carpet powder left over, I will occasionally put it in smaller jelly jars and place them around my house as mini air fresheners. And depending on the essential oils I use, I might even put them in the fridge to help eliminate odors. (My favorite for doing this is just lemongrass essential oil.)
